Activities—A button on the MSN® Messenger version 7.0 (and later) client toolbar that directs users to applications identified as Activities.
Activity—A script-driven Web page that uses the Activity API object model.
Activity Window —The portion of the MSN Messenger Conversation window in which a script-driven Web page that uses the Activity API object model runs.
AppID—One of two optional parameters that can be passed to the ActiveX® control that invokes an Activity within MSN Messenger.

BOT—One of two optional parameters that can be passed to the ActiveX control that invokes an Activity within MSN Messenger.

Chat History—The display of instant messages that have been sent and received; part of the MSN Messenger Conversation window.
Contact List—The main display of the MSN Messenger client; it displays your list of family, friends, and coworkers who also use Messenger.
conversant—A user who is participating in a conversation.
Conversation window—The window that displays Chat History; it opens when a user invites another user to an instant message conversation. This window can also display webcam images and an Activity when these features are active.

DHTML—A method of rendering HTML that can be manipulated using scripting and the Document Object Model (DOM).
direct connection—The state that exists when two computers are addressable on the same network, and one computer can create a simple network connection to the other.

emailID—One of two optional parameters that can be passed to the ActiveX control that invokes an Activity within MSN Messenger.
emoticon—A small image that displays in an instant message. A number of emoticons are provided with MSN Messenger; some are animated. Users can create their own custom images to include in instant messages.

Games—A button on the MSN Messenger 7.0 (and later) client toolbar that directs users to applications identified as Games.

indirect connection—The state that exists when two computers are not able to connect to each other because they are on different networks, or because one or both are behind a firewall or other network security device. The computers can still connect using a common switchboard server.
instant message (IM)—A text message that is sent immediately to another Messenger client or a mobile device.
invitation—A message sent to a remote user asking if he or she would like to participate in an activity, such as chat, a webcam conversation, or a game. The activity starts when the remote user accepts the invitation, typically by clicking Accept.

Launch Site—The name of the button that appears in the standard toolbar of MSN Messenger 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2. Replaced with the Games or Activities buttons on the MSN Messenger 7.0. (and later) toolbar.

Permission Flag—An element in the MSGRP2P.xml file that adds access to restricted features within an Activity.
PUID—The acronym for the Microsoft® .NET Passport Unique ID.

switchboard server—A server that facilitates the connection between MSN Messenger users. These servers provide the connection for instant message conversations and for an Activity when the computers cannot create a direct network connection.

test cloud—The portion of the Microsoft internal network that provides a subnetwork for testing Activityfunctionality.

user—A person who uses MSN Messenger.
